Sprint Crystal Globe We are awarding this here in Minneapolis because the March 17th event is the final sprint race of the season.
Sprint Racers start with a qualifying race. One racer every 15 or 30 seconds on a course that takes about 3 minutes. Results are calculated and the top 30 move on to heats. World Cup Sprints use a televised heat selection process (think large red buttons) to allow athletes to pick their heats. Once heats are decided, there is about a two hour break before the racing starts again. Then its 5 heats of 6 skiers each with the top two finishers advancing, plus two Lucky Losers (the next two best times). We then have semifinals, and then a final heat. Mens and Womens heats will alternate, so the action keeps going at a quick pace. To win a sprint competition, you have to race the qualifier and then three more times!
