SkiSparks Volunteer Registration Policy
All volunteers for SkiSparks will register at mysl.org and are required to complete abuse prevention training (available on-line). Registration and on-line training are free.
Why is MyXC requiring volunteer registration?
In the past couple of years, many aspects of youth sports have changed. A federal law and evolving insurance policies now have requirements making it mandatory for us to know who is interacting with children in our programs.
In 2018, Congress enacted a new Federal law, the “Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017” which specifically requires amateur sports organizations to train all adult volunteers who come into contact with children regarding the prevention and reporting of child abuse. It is more commonly referred to as the SafeSport Act.
MyXC Abuse Prevention Policy & Procedures
As directed by the law, MYSL has developed a Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy as a foundation for a safe environment for kids, families and our volunteers. The policy and procedures includes:
- All volunteers will now register through mysl.org.
- MYSL will complete background checks on all club leaders and many of our coaches/volunteers.
- Explicit no 1:1 adult:child contact policy.
- Reporting procedure.
All adults who are in regular contact with children or have positions of authority over children will complete the MyXC Abuse Prevention and Athlete Well-Being Training. This training will also be made available to all parents/caregivers.
After completing the training, volunteers will need to complete the quiz to certify they have completed and understand the materials.
Additional Benefits of Volunteer Registration
MYSL will have a roster of all volunteers with our clubs and volunteers will be included on our insurance policy. We hope that an accident will never happen, but if it does, all volunteers that are registered with us will know they are covered. Understanding who is volunteering for MYSL will also help us focus on developing and retaining more volunteers. We will be able to address gender balance and work with grant partners as well.
