Schedule and Location
For 2021, we will meet the following Sundays from 2:00-3:30pm @ Spidahl's Ski Gaard:
January: 9 (reduced groups), 16 (reduced groups), 23, 30
February: 7, 14, 21, 28
Registration is currently full.
We will be limiting instructional groups to 25 students and coaches. Face coverings will be required when social distancing is not possible, and students will not be allowed inside the ski shop. If you feel unwell or are presenting symptoms consistent with COVID-19, please stay home for the week. Please continue to check back; this section will be updated as policies are developed and refined.
See "Family Equipment Rental," below, for additional COVID-19 related changes to equipment rental policy.
Equipment and Trail Passes
Equipment will be issued at the Fergus Falls YMCA on the following days:
- Monday, November 9, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Thursday, November 12, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Equipment cost is $40 per skier ($100 family maximum). Cash or checks payable to "Ottertail Youth Nordic" on equipment issue nights at the YMCA.
There is no extra charge for MYSL participants to ski at Spidahl Ski Gaard during the MYSL season; however, non-MYSL family members are required to pay trail and equipment fees. Families are encouraged to purchase a family trail pass for the season. Contact Spidahl Ski Gaard for more information (218-736-5097).
Family Equipment Rental
Due to the fact that the host site is also the home of owners David and Cindy Spidahl, we need our families to take some extra precautions due to COVID-19. Equipment rental will be modified for family members (who are not already registered with MYSL) who wish to rent ski equipment.
For the 2020-21 season, David and Cindy are offering skiers the opportunity to rent equipment for the SEASON . Those who choose the SEASON EQUIPMENT RENTAL option will keep the skis, boots, and poles in their possession for the season. The cost for SEASON EQUIPMENT RENTAL is $40 person. You may call Spidahl Ski Gaard at 218-736-5097 and schedule a fitting prior to the beginning of the MYSL season.
Season and daily passes for TRAIL FEES will continue to be offered at the prices which have been in place for the past several seasons. Please refer to skigaard.com for prices.
Weather and cancellation policy
We will not ski if the air temperature is below 4˚ F, or the wind chill is below -15˚ F, or at the leader's discretion. Cancellations will be posted on this Web page under "Weather Announcements" and a Remind (@otynski) text will be sent to parents/families. Cancellations will not be rescheduled.
Children should dress in layers. A moisture wicking under layer, an insulating layer, and a wind proof layer are typically appropriate. Please use your discretion noting your child's activity level and the outside temperature/wind chill. Often a winter jacket and snow pants or a snow suit are too warm once the child gets skiing.
This club is run by volunteers. Though we do not expect all parents to also serve as volunteers, the success and affordability of this program comes directly from your contributions of time, energy, and talent. We do have a number of ways to get involved with the program; please contact us if you would like to discuss ways you can contribute.
To register as a volunteer, log into your MYSL account and visit the Get Involved page.
Following are some suggested areas of volunteer service:
We really need your help! If you plan to volunteer as a coach, please contact us. You do not need to be an expert skier to coach. We offer coaching positions for beginner, intermediate, and advanced (skate ski) students. Instructional information for coaches to use for each session will be provided. Given enough interest, training opportunities for coaches can also be arranged.
Assistant coaches act as tagalongs for all levels. Basic duties include assisting students with putting on/taking off skis, helping with drills and other activities, and keeping students focused.
Bib coordinators are responsible for making color coordinated level cards with skier's name and inserting them in bib pockets and collecting bibs at session's end.
Ski Equipment Coordinator
The ski equipment coordinator assists our head coordinator with distributing equipment -- keeping track of who has what, collecting rental fees, and collecting equipment at the end of the season
