Hello MYSL families! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Alayna Sonnesyn and I am in the midst of skiing and traveling around the world- chasing my dreams as a professional cross country ski racer!
I grew up in Plymouth, MN where my parents taught me how to ski at a very young age. They encourage my siblings and me to spend as much time as possible outside and to turn activities into adventures with few limits. They brought us to MYSL practice at French Park every Sunday afternoon throughout the winter where we got to ski with our friends AND play games with them.

Does your skier have the right clothing?
Amy began skiing with her family in Winona at a young age. She quickly aspired to local races and club level racing, attending many Junior Nationals. She started skiing in the high school league in 10th grade and was State Champ (team and individual) in 1988. She went to Middlebury College for one year and skied on the team. She then came back to the midwest to work with a coach, finishing her Physics degree at St. Mary’s in Winona. She skied many Kortes (winning three times) and attended regional junior training camps in the summer.
Minnesota Youth Ski League, with the help of CXC (Central Cross Country), is networking “Ski for Sport” programs throughout the Central Region, to develop the best possible experience for our young skiers. Ski for Sport programs follow the guidelines of the LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) stage of “Learn to Train”. This is a critical window for skill development. MyXC and CXC have summarized the youth and junior development stages in the Midwest in this document.
SkiSparks Clubs are adding registration for adaptive youth for the 2018-19 season. Look for the "Adaptive Skier" selections as part of club registration.
Youth with physical disabilities that may limit the use of poles/s or lower leg impairments, visual impaired youth and sit skiers* are welcome. All skiers, adaptive and non-adaptive, will be in the same programming, with appropriate modifications made when necessary.
MYSL Executive Director, Amy Cichanowski, facilitated the Youth Committee meeting at the CXC Congress in Eau Claire, WI on April 7, 2018. Full minutes are posted below. Highlights include a fluor wax restriction for all U14 races.
Jessie Diggins and teammate Kikkan Randall won the Olympic Team Sprint today! We are so proud of them. This is the first Olympic Gold medal for the US in cross country EVER! And also the first Olympic medal for women in cross country. Check out our facebook page for lots of coverage
We had a great time at Wirth Park on Saturday Feb 10th with Ski X (timed obstacle course) as part of the Skiwerx Series. 40 kids helped us test a new course on a beuatiful sunny day. If you missed it, you still have a chance, as we will be running this event again as part of Midwest jr Champs.
