Welcome to the 2012 MYSL at Wild River State Park!

Announcements:

FEBRUARY 5TH SKI CLUB: With the warm weather we are having this week, I anticipate we will have to meet at Trollhaugen again.  (2 p.m.-4 p.m.)

HAVE YOU LOGGED IN YOUR K'S YET?

Overview

Our club was formed to help kids from ages 4-15 in the North Branch area learn to love the life-long sport of cross-country skiing.  The low registration fee makes this a great way for younger skiers to experience the sport for the fist time.

This will be our sixth year in MYSL.  Children will be grouped into appropriate classes prior to or at the first meeting. Our club is organized by a volunteer coordinator, Pam Kotys, and volunteer coaches.

2012 Schedule and Location:

Our first meeting date for the 2012 ski season will be Sunday, Jan 8 at 2:00 p.m.

Our “home course” is at Wild River State Park if there is adequate snow. Our alternate site will be Trollhollow Nordic Ski Center at Trollhaugen Winter Recreation Area. Please open the attachment on the bottom of this page "2012 Schedule" for specific days and times.

Registration:

Registration is handled online by clicking the “registration” link above.  Registration cost is $30 until Nov. 15th; $35 until Dec. 15th; $40 after Dec. 15th. I encourage you to register early and save money.  Early registration will allow for time to find the number of coaches our club will need.  Equipment rental fees (see equipment section below) can also be paid online.  If you have your own skis, be sure you have “classic” style skis if you are in levels 1-4 and “skate” style skis if you are in levels 5 or 6.  Skis with 3 pin bindings are not recommended.

Weather and Cancellation Policy:

We will not ski if the air temperature is below -10˚ F, or the wind chill is below -15˚F, or at the leader’s discretion.  Cancellations will be posted on this web page in the “Announcements” section above.  I will also e-mail a cancellation notice to each household by noon (12:00).  You can call me Sunday morning at 612-695-8999.

Equipment and Clothing:

Buying your own:  Think about buying your own equipment from a retailer or a ski swap.  The MYSL has a ski swap each November. See the link on the side of this page for details.  One advantage about buying from a ski swap or retailer, is that you can use it throughout the season, and then sell your equipment back at a ski swap the following year or when it no longer fits.

Waxable skis are easier to learn good technique with and ultimately more fun because of better glide. For the youngest skiers, waxless skis are more convenient and enjoyable. If you are considering new skis for an advanced skier, we recommend classic skis for both striding and skating because of their range of use and flexibility. Combination skis and skating skis are very rigid for young, light skiers, and perform poorly in soft to medium packed snow.

Renting: Club equipment rental fee per skier for the season is $30 for the entire season. This equipment can be taken home. Money from club rental fees will be used to purchase more club skis for future seasons. REGISTER EARLY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS FANTASTIC RENTAL OPPORTUNITY!! Please remember we have a limited number of ski packages and sizes.  If you paid for rental equipment online but were not able to be outfitted, you will be reimbursed for the fees.

State park equipment rental $5 per session ($7 adults). This equipment must remain at the park.

Clothing:  Children should be dressed in layers. A moisture wicking layer, and insulating layer, and a wind proof layer are typically appropriate. Please use your discretion noting your child’s activity level and the outside temperature/wind chill.  Often a winter jacket and snow pants or a snowsuit are too warm once the child gets skiing. Warm hats and mittens are mandatory.  The attachment entitled "New Skier Orientation" has more clothing suggestions.

Volunteering and Parent Involvement:

This is a volunteer run club.  The success and affordability of this program comes directly from your contributions of time, energy, and talent.  By registering your child for this club, you are committing to the club’s success and are agreeing to volunteer. Level 1 skiers (or 4 or 5 year old) skiers will need to be accompanied by a parent.  Please consider coaching as it is our number one need!  You do not necessarily need to coach at your child’s level…in fact it is often better if you don’t.  If you are able to help coach “on snow”, we will provide instructional information for each session and discuss training opportunities to learn more about proven coaching techniques and drills.

If you aren’t comfortable coaching on skies, there are many other ways in which you can volunteer, including.

  • Assistant coach: Sometimes we just need someone to provide encouragement, a smile, and support on snow.
  • Snack Coordinator: To encourage parents to sign up to bring a healthy snack each week, remind parents, and clean up afterward.
  • Bib Coordinator: To help identify the skiers as part of the club, they wear “race bibs” during the sessions.  We need someone to take the bibs out and distribute at the beginning of each session, and collect the bibs at the end of each session.
  • Trail Center attendant (keep the fire going): One parent to keep the fire going, be a contact to take messages for the group leader, help children/parents “check in” at the beginning of each session, and help with any emergencies.
  • Potluck Coordinator: To plan a menu, make sign ups, and send reminders for our end of the year potluck.
  • Prairie-loppet Coordinator: To plan the Prairie-loppet race, organize volunteers, order ribbons, and set the courses.
  • Waxing expert:  We may have some waxable skis available for levels 2-3 this year.  We will need one or two people who can assist skiers in wax types, application, and removal.
  • Lead a Special Ski Day: Prepare a fun activity for all the kids to enjoy during our normal ski time.  This could be a treasure hunt, costume party, destination ski to a certain spot on the course with treat at the destination…really anything.  Fun activities are a great was to help the kids love skiing without knowing they are actually training.
  • If you have ideas about how to help kids learn to ski, now is your chance to make it happen.

Parking and other costs:

State Park Vehicle Permit (Day permit $5) or (Annual $25) is required for all vehicles entering a state park. This can be purchased and used at any state park.
